Suicide Facts and Warning Signs

Deaths by suicide in 2023: 49,000. That’s one life every 11minutesMales make up 80% of the demographic for completed suicide.Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people ages 10-24The highest rates of suicide are among the elderly population ages 75+.Over the last 5 years, suicide rates have grown in our country and are the highest they have been since 1941.The LGBTQIA+ community, high school students, and veterans are some of the most at risk people groups in our country.Suicide Warning SignsVerbal Warning Signs. Expressing feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, maybe feeling like a burden. Stating they want to die or making statements that they cannot keep livingBehavioral Warning Signs. Canceling plans often. Withdrawing from loved ones. Lack of participation in group settings. Change in behavior. Increased use of substances. Reckless behavior. Emotional Warning Signs. Sudden calmness or overly improved mood, especially following depression. Severely anxious, angry, or agitated. Intense or long lasting sorrow or depression. Fluctuating moods.Situational Warning Signs. Loss of loved one, job loss, end of relationship or other form of grief. Illness: sudden, acute, chronic, or terminal. History of trauma and abuse.

How to Help Prevent Suicide

1.Reach Out: If you suspect someone you know may be struggling, reach out! Better to ask and be wrong then to not ask and be right.2. Active Listening And Reassurance: Listen attentively and without judgement. Meet your friend/family member where they are.3. Point them to resources: Help them to find professional help and know when to call emergency services.4. Do not leave them alone. Make sure that they are not alone if they are actively contemplating suicide!5. Remove potential means for attempting suicide.
